Averrhoa Carambola
(Star Fruit)

Family: Oxalidaceae
Origin: Tropical Asia

This photo was
taken at the flower show at Sentosa in Feb this
year. This plant is only a sapling and it needs to be much bigger and
stronger to be able to hold the juicy star fruits on its branches.
Star fruit
juice is refreshing and is said to lower blood pressure. One way to tell if
the star fruit is sweet or sour is to look at the ribbed edges of its
jagged form. I read that if the ‘ribs’ are narrow the fruit
would tend to be sour and if thicker, the fruit would be sweet.
