There are many species of bougainvillea. We have so many types of
bougainvillea planted along our expressways that we tend to take them for
granted. The one and only bougainvillea in my garden is bursting with
clusters of flowers almost on every branch probably due to the recent hot
weather. The plant started to bloom about 10 days ago and have not attained
its peak. It makes me think about how a plant can give so much of its
creativity in such a short time and that it is a pity that people sometimes
waste theirs in a lifetime.
This particular specie in the picture has two distinct shades of red or
what I would call shocking pink. I have looked at the pages on
bougainvillea in the “1001 Garden Plants in Singapore”
and it looks like what is described as Bougainvillea ‘Klong fire’ or ‘Mahara
double red’ in the book.

Brownea Rosa-de-monte
(Rose of Venezuela)
|
Family: Leguminosae
Origin: Venezuela

This flower looks like an embroidered silk ball that was tossed over a
balcony by a pretty young lady looking for a husband in olden day China. The
lucky guy amongst the suitors who caught it became her husband. Today this
custom is replaced by speed dating and only nature reminds us of this
ancient match-making technique.
